The largest construction project Stonehenge has seen for several millennia was completed last December with the opening of the prestigious new visitor centre. The building delivers excellent thermal performance thanks, in part, to Kingspan products.

Marking the culmination of over 20 years of planning from English Heritage, the single-storey centre comprises two self-contained pods and a ticket-booth, unified beneath a gently undulating canopy. Project architects Denton Corker Marshall specified the Kingspan TEK® Building System for the exterior walls of the south pod, containing exhibition spaces; the interior walls of the north pod, containing a café and retail space; the ticket booth and an ancillary building.
Constructed from high performance structural insulated panels (SIPs), the System can achieve whole wall U-values of 0.21 W/m2.K and below; and was designed, pre-cut and installed to the project’s specifications by Kingspan TEK Delivery Partners, Glosford Timber Solutions.
728 m2 of Kingspan Insulation’s high performance Thermataper TT47 LPC/FM was also installed on the roof of both pods by Malone Roofing. The product provided a simple, fast-track solution to preventing water ponding without having to integrate a fall into the pod roofs and delivered high levels of thermal performance.
Angela Dapper, Project Associate at Denton Corker Marshall commented: “The specification of the Building System has been a particularly successful part of the project. The product enabled us to design the buildings with minimum wall thicknesses, while still achieving excellent thermal performance and also allowed the building envelopes to be constructed quickly and efficiently with virtually no site waste. As a direct result of this success; the main contractor VINCI Construction UK also requested that the System be erected for some additional internal walls.”
Mike Fleming from Glosford Timber Solutions added: “Aside from the regular visits from dignitaries, this project was also slightly unusual as we had to design the panels to act as a lateral restraint on the south pod’s steel frame. The scheme is also setting the highest standards in health and safety, Considerate Constructors requirements and environmental standards, which we were easily able to meet.”
All components of the Building System are supplied by Kingspan TEK Delivery Partners, ensuring far fewer deliveries compared with many traditional construction methods. Its unique proprietary jointing system also ensures minimal air loss, with potential for air leakage levels as good as 1m3/hour/m2 at 50 Pa.
The work at Stonehenge was overseen by VINCI Construction UK and included a number of other measures aimed at improving the landscape setting of the World Heritage Site, such as the closure of part of the A344 and the removal of most facilities directly around the stones.
