Bristol could be Europe's green capital

Bristol is in the running to be voted European Green Capital - for the second time ! Representing the UK in the race for the title in 2014, the city of Bristol will be up against fellow finalists Copenhagen and Frankfurt. The current holder of the crown is the small city of Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain, while Nantes, in France, represents 2013.

Our over-populated planet

Demand on the living resources of our planet has doubled since 1966, according to The 2012 Living Planet report. Increasing demand from the industrialisation of developing countries and from rising populations is not being matched by improvements in productivity or efficiency.

Cities must adapt to climate change now - report says

Europe should seize the opportunity of improving quality of life while adapting to climate change in cities, according to a report from the European Environment Agency (EEA). The report also warns that delaying adaptation will be much more costly in the long-term.

UK government launches £35 million fund for eco-entrepreneurs

The government have today announced a £35 million fund for energy entrepreneurs and a £3 million fund for innovation in heat storage. The Energy Entrepreneurs Fund will administer £35 million over the next three years for SMEs to develop and demonstrate low-carbon, energy efficiency technologies and services.

Kitchen manufacturer uses its own waste for fuel

A Gloucester-based manufacturer of kitchen furniture demonstrated its green credentials last week when it held an environmental awareness event to mark the official launch of its new £1.1 million biomass facility. The state-of-the art burner runs on wood waste generated by Premiere Kitchens – a subsidiary of Markey Group.

Easter Island to build with tyres and bottles

As many as 80,000 tourists visit Easter Island each year, exploring both the unique culture and the beautiful landscape of the island. Although this tourism supports the island’s economy, it comes at a high cost. During the high season, this influx of visitors generates up to eight tons of trash daily.

Renewables could spawn thousands of jobs, says report

New research by the Renewable Energy Association (REA) and Innovas reveals that the UK’s £12.5 billion renewables industry supports 110,000 jobs across supply chain, and could support 400,000 by 2020. ‘Renewable Energy: Made in Britain,’ was launched today, on the eve of the Clean Energy Ministerial Summit.

New report exposes power hungry IT sector

This week, Greenpeace’s ‘How Green is your Cloud’ report gave a critical account of some of the world’s biggest IT companies and their green credentials. The report claimed that not enough clean energy was being used in data centres and stated that there was a lack of transparency regarding infrastructure and operations.
