Tidal power prototype for Pembrokeshire

A full-scale tidal power generator aimed at showing the potential for renewable energy has been unveiled in Pembrokeshire. The underwater turbine in Ramsey Sound will run for a 12-month trial, with its energy powering homes in St Davids.

Renewables generated almost 15% UK electricity in 2013

Electricity from renewable sources increased 30 per cent over 2013 to account for 14.9 per cent of total generation, according to the latest figures from DECC. The increase marks a rise of 3.6 percentage points on 2012, when renewables made up 11.3 per cent of total electricity generation.

Buglife Exposes Misleading Claims of Yield Loss

NFU vice-president Guy Smith has publically claimed that farmers in Sweden have reported a 70 per cent loss in spring oil seed rape yields. Similar claims appear on the NFU website and twitter and are central to the NFU's position that the ban on Cruiser (clothianidin) treated seeds must be lifted to prevent crop loss from flea beetles.

Wildlife campaigners alarmed by latest GM plan

Campaigners say UK researchers are trialling a GM wheat that ‘cries wolf', sending out a constant chemical help signal to ladybirds and other predators, a signal that is normally only produced when a plant is under attack from aphids or other herbivores.
