More carpet waste being recycled

Almost 6,000 tonnes of carpet waste was diverted from landfill by seven UK-based manufacturing members of Carpet Recycling UK during 2011 – representing a diversion rate of 85% and a 50% increase on 2010.

Microbes provide futuristic lighting

This unusual looking contraption could be the mood lighting of the future - and it's entirely natural and uses no electricity. The bio-light uses different biological technologies to create ambient light effects. The concept explores the use of bioluminescent bacteria, which are fed with methane and composted material.

Community wind turbine seeks votes

Greener Leith, an Edinburgh green group is in the final short list for a grant of up to £80,000 for a proposed Community Wind Turbine project. If the project gets the green light it won't just generate green energy, it will also generate a surplus of hundreds of thousands of pounds over its lifetime, which will be used to support community projects in Edinburgh.

Environmental watchdogs could lose their teeth

Old quarries become wildlife havens

Brownfield sites can be very important wildlife habitats, and former quarries especially so. A former sand and gravel quarry in North Yorkshire, restored to wetland by Lafarge, has been praised by the country’s top wildlife agency for its richness of habitat.
