Support grows for pro FIT campaign

Online social housing journal 'Inside Housing' has launched a campaign to ensure social landlords can continue to access vital green subsidies to combat fuel poverty. Senior Labour politicians have pledged their support - shadow secretary for energy and climate change Caroline Flint and shadow housing minister Jack Dromey joined landlords representing 1.4 million homes, charities and companies last week in throwing their weight behind the Green Light campaign.

Wetland garden wins an award

An unusual wetland garden using native British species has won an award. Environmental consultancy Wildscapes is celebrating with client Sheffield Forgemasters, as its project has been awarded Gold in this year's Yorkshire in Bloom Awards.

Compost makes a big difference in landscape restoration

Over 30 representatives from local authorities and quarrying and mining companies with an interest in the restoration of landscapes affected by mineral extraction attended a free interactive showcase, hosted by Welsh Slate and WRAP Cymru at Penrhyn Quarry in Bethesda, Gwynedd on 2 November.

Nottingham completes major solar installation

Nottingham City Council in partnership with E.ON have announced the completion of a major energy infrastructure project in Aspley, Nottingham. In one of the single largest domestic photovoltaic (PV) schemes to be delivered in the UK, the installation of solar panels to 592 council homes in Aspley further cements Nottingham's reputation as the UK's most energy self-sufficient city.

Social housing schemes hardest hit in tariff cuts

As widely predicted, the government announced plans to cut Feed in Tariff payments by more than half yesterday - meaning the annual income from an average domestic array would drop from about £1,100 to £500. The proposal would see the payments for solar generated electricity cut from 43.3p per kWh to 21p.

Camden residents eligible for energy saving measures

In London, the RE:NEW scheme, sponsored by the Mayor, and supported by all 32 Local Councils, is providing free home energy visits to help residents beat the winter chill and take care of the environment in the Borough of Camden. As well as saving householders money, the visits will also help residents to do their bit to tackle climate change, by reducing CO2 emissions.

Social housing may not qualify for Green Deal

Recently, 'Inside Housing' revealed that the government is planning to exclude social landlords from accessing millions of pounds of funding to tackle fuel poverty. The organisation said it understands the coalition is splitting the energy company obligation, which will subsidise retrofit works as part of its £7 billion a year green deal, into two pots - one of which will be used for ‘hard-to-treat’ measures such as solid wall insulation, and another called ‘affordable warmth’ which will be used to reduce fuel poverty.

Most climate change vulnerable seek support

Ministers and representatives of some 30 countries, among the most vulnerable to the harmful effects of climate change, will gather in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 13th and 14th November 2011, just ahead of UN climate talks in Durban (COP17). Vulnerable countries are seeking heightened awareness, accountability and support in the face of real and growing damages and suffering caused by climate change.
